Vesak Day

Born around 600 BCE in what is now Nepal, Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment and became known as the Awakened One, or Buddha. After a life spent traveling and teaching, he died at age 80; his followers believe he left the cycle of rebirth and achieved Nirvana. According to Buddhist scriptures, the three major events in his life—birth, enlightenment, and death—all took place during the full moon in the lunar month of Vesakha. Vesak Day falls on Sunday, May 15 this year, and Monday, May 16 is a public holiday in Singapore.

On Vesak Day, worshippers traditionally gather at temples before dawn to pray, chant mantras, and sing hymns. Ephemeral offerings like candles, flowers, and incense remind believers that life is brief and that all things change and eventually disappear. Good deeds performed on Vesak Day are considered especially meritorious, and Buddhists might give to the needy, visit care homes, or donate blood.

We wish all who celebrate Vesak Day peace and happiness.
