My motivation to write this book came about after interning last summer at a Child Protection Agency in Pakistan called SPARC. During this internship, I attended one of their workshops on child protection. They talked about “good touch” and “bad touch,” and that made me interested in writing this book to spread awareness."

Senior Publishes First Book for a Good Cause

Madhubani paintings or Mithila art is a beautiful art form created mainly by women in the Mithila region of India and have been used in storytelling for centuries. Over the past four years, twelfth grade student Shreya Jha has been working to raise awareness and support for these women artisans. She recently wrote “Daughters of Madhubani", a book that aims to showcase this beautiful art form, as well as the community that has preserved it for generations. All proceeds from the book are going to help support the Madhubani artists. Purchase your copy here: https://amzn.to/3AYqV4A

“Working on this project with the female artisans who produce this beautiful art against all odds has helped me understand that there was a whole different world outside my comfortable life, where things I took for granted like running water and indoor plumbing were luxuries and equality and justice for women was a distant dream. I am fortunate to have been born in a family of strong and impressive women who faced down the deep gender inequities of Indian society with grace and determination. I dedicate this book to my great grandmother, Veena Jha, who was married at a very young age, and without completing high school, authored three books and was fluent in four languages, including English."

Singapore American School had 10 students qualify for that honor this year—Nitya Arora, Ayam Babu (not pictured), Vincent Choi, Atharv Chowdhary, Avi Kabra, Andrew Kim, Jessica Kang, Ryan Lee, Jerry Liu, and Josh Shin. Their outstanding performances at the AIME won them the IASAS gold this year! Additionally, ninth grade student Andrew Kim won a bronze medal for his overall individual performance. Elementary Students Earn Diplomas of Merit in Music Competition

Roze D., first grade student

Second grade student Florence L. and first grade student Roze D., both former participants in the EAA program’s “Growing With Music” activity taught by Larisa Tupitsina recently earned Diplomas of Merit at the 27th ANEMOS International Competition of Musical Performance. Due to COVID-19 and international travel restrictions, this year’s competition was run as a virtual festival.

Both Florence and Roze started practicing flute before the circuit breaker and continued online instruction with Ms. Tupitsina who recorded their performances and sent them to the online competition in Rome.

In the “First Notes“ division, a category for beginners, they both earned Diplomas of Merit in the age group designated for up to seven-year-olds. The “Merit” designation is the second-highest prize for Italian qualification behind the top level of “Distinction.”

Both girls started playing the recorder in Ms. Tupitsina’s EAA class before making the transition to the flute. Given that both girls are relatively new to the flute and have only been practicing for a few months, this is a tremendous honor and result!

High School Senior Wins Girl Scout Gold Award

High school senior Abby Burden earned her Girl Scout Gold Award this year.

Some background on the award:
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a girl can achieve in Girl Scouts. To earn this award, a girl must spend 80 hours on a take action project, which must be approved by the Gold Award Committee. The project must also be sustainable and have a positive impact on the greater community. It is equivalent to the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts.

Her Project:
For her Gold Award, she wanted to focus on educating students on the importance of online safety. She did this by making five lessons about online safety and cyberbullying. She was able to teach some of these lessons to sixth grade students at SAS and two Girl Scout troops. She also published her lessons on oercommons.org which is an open-source website that allows people from around the world to share and use lesson plans.

Burden also had the amazing opportunity to participate in Scouts and Guides Care this year. She was one of the representatives of US Girl Scouts Overseas Singapore along with her peer Saanya Gupta. During this event, all of the scouting organizations in Singapore came together to deliver handwritten cards to amazing healthcare workers at Singapore General Hospital. She also had the pleasure of meeting Singapore's President, Hamilah Yacob.
