The first phase of the Singapore American School campus upgrade plan is the largest of the three major phases of construction. The new elementary school building will be built on the north and south fields, far away from the existing elementary school to ensure that the existing elementary school can function without disruption until the new one is built.

The new elementary school will provide state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, expanded play space, and a covered bus bay for all students. SAS is targeting Greenmark Platinum for all new construction.

Dining options for the high school will be expanded with a new dining hall near the shared block (S-Block), and now include Cafe Shiok! on level two of the high school library which was renovated with more quiet spaces for study.

This phase also includes a range of new structures and renovations to support sport and wellness at SAS, including a 50-meter pool and an athletic complex, and expansion of the school’s fitness center.

Student Life impact
In the first phase of the plan, from May 2021 to the second quarter of 2023, the following facilities will be impacted. Students have alternative spaces.
Fields
Baseball Field	Unaffected throughout construction. However, it will remain closed during the summers of 2022 and 2023 to ensure safety
Baseball Store Building	Unaffected throughout construction
Long Jump Pits
Middle School Field	Closed starting May 29, 2021. This location will be the site of the new 50-meter swimming pool. We will renovate the middle school courtyards to provide new play, exercise, and social spaces.
North Field / Softball Field	Closed starting May 29, 2021 . This location will be the site of the new elementary school. The new softball field will be part of the west fields opening in May 2021.
Track	The track will be subject to occasional lane closures
Stadium Grandstand	Current grandstand has been demolished. The new one will be open for use soon
Central Grass Stadium Field	Unaffected throughout construction. However, it will remain closed during the summers of 2022 and 2023 to ensure safety
Swimming

Phase Two

In the second phase, once the existing elementary school is demolished, the new middle school building will be constructed adjacent to the campus rainforest, with great views of the trees, and access to outdoor learning opportunities in the rainforest. The new middle school will include a new dedicated dining hall and sports complex. Also included in this phase are new sports fields, a covered parking complex, and revamped vehicle and pedestrian entry to the campus for improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety, and ongoing renovations to high school learning spaces.

During this phase the existing middle school building remains functional, while the new construction takes place near the rainforest, away from students.

Phase Three

In the third and final phase, once the existing middle school is demolished, the new welcome center will be constructed, significantly upgrading the experience for current, and new families. The welcome center will overlook the campus square, a new park at the center of the campus, and face the expansion of the high school with new dining options, and expanded space for the Center of Innovation. The campus square at the heart of the campus knits the campus together, creating views and pathways to nearly every building on campus, and will create a sense of place and community.
