Rock climbing is an exhilarating sport that requires strength, endurance, and mental focus. Eleventh grader Kiana, a climbing enthusiast, shares some reasons to tackle rock climbing. Rock climbing is a thrilling and challenging sport that offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, there are plenty of reasons to get into rock climbing. With her guidance, you’ll learn to take on challenging routes, work with a team, and push your limits in a safe and supportive environment in no time.

Enhance Your Physical Fitness
Rock climbing is a full-body workout that requires strength, endurance, and flexibility. It's an excellent way to improve your cardiovascular health, build muscle, and burn calories. A common misunderstanding about rock climbing is that you only need upper body strength to pull yourself up the wall. In reality, rock climbing uses a wide range of muscles, both upper and lower body, but mainly focuses on the biggest muscle groups in your body (legs). No matter if you are a beginner or more advanced, rock climbing has aspects to fit your skill level and help you improve your strength.

Boost Your Mental Health
Rock climbing is a great stress reliever and can help improve focus, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence. It's also a great way to get outside and enjoy nature, which can have a positive impact on mental well-being. Rock climbing has an aspect of puzzle solving that is great for your mental health, and you can apply what you learn from rock climbing to your everyday life. For example, routes in climbing are often called ‘problems’ because while you are climbing, you are thinking about and finding ways to ‘solve’ the problem. When you are on the wall, and you encounter a ‘problem,’ you only have a short amount of time to solve the issue before your arms and legs get too fatigued, and you fall off. So, we can apply this skill to everyday life in order to help us solve challenges quicker and more efficiently.

Grow Your Community
Rock climbing is a social sport, and there's a strong sense of community among climbers. Joining a local climbing gym or club is a great way to meet new people and make friends who share your passion for climbing. You can learn from other climbers and share your own experiences, which can be incredibly rewarding. The sense of connecting can also provide motivation to keep climbing and improving your skills.

Choose Your Own Adventure
Rock climbing is an exciting and adventurous sport that offers a sense of accomplishment and a unique perspective on the world. Whether you're climbing a local crag or a big wall in a far-off land, the thrill of ascending a steep rock face is unlike anything else. The sense of accomplishment and the challenge of climbing can be incredibly fulfilling, and the views from the top are often breathtaking. Climbing can also take you to new and exciting places, giving you the opportunity to explore the outdoors and experience new cultures.

Challenge Yourself
Rock climbing can be enjoyed in many different forms, from indoor gym climbing to outdoor sport climbing and trad climbing. This versatility means that there is always something new to try and explore, making it a lifelong sport. Starting with indoor climbing is a great way to learn the basics and build strength before moving on to more challenging outdoor climbs. You can also try different types of climbing, such as bouldering, top-roping, or lead climbing, to keep things interesting and challenging. With so many options, you can always find a new adventure in rock climbing.

Climbing at SAS
Over the past several years, indoor climbing has gained in popularity, and sport climbing made its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. This popularity is also evident at Singapore American School, where the number of students involved in climbing has significantly increased over the past decade.

Did you know that SAS has a newly formed competitive climbing team? The SAS Climbing Team is composed of students from grades six through twelve, and they compete against other international schools throughout Singapore. They have opportunities to test their skills against other climbers, climb in challenging new places, and make lasting friendships and memories.

Rock climbing is a sport that offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits, as well as the opportunity to meet new people and explore new places. SAS's competitive climbing team provides an added layer of excitement and challenge for those who are looking for a competitive outlet. It's an activity that is suitable for all ages and skill levels and one that can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime.

Giving Supports Rock Climbing at SAS
One of the recent initiatives supported by the SAS community was the addition of auto belay routes to the school's climbing wall, which provides an exciting and challenging experience for climbers of all levels. Thanks to the philanthropic support received this year, the climbing program at SAS has been able to make significant upgrades to its facilities. With the addition of new auto belay routes on the climbing wall, students now have access to a wider range of climbing experiences and can practice climbing alone or with a partner without the need for a human belayer. This has made the sport more accessible and safer for students of all skill levels. By giving to SAS, you are investing in the future of our students, educators, and community—supporting excellence, extraordinary care, and possibilities.
