The Middle School Caring for Cambodia Club recently embarked on a meaningful service-learning trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia, from February 20 to 23, 2025.

Open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8, the club met every Monday after school for 12 weeks, from November 2024 to February 2025. Led by faculty sponsors Cormac Davey, Amy Bell, and Monsiha Agarwal, the meetings provided students with insights into Cambodian history and culture, as well as the mission of Caring for Cambodia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving education in Siem Reap. The club also explored the purpose of service learning and how to create a meaningful impact.

Preparing for Service

In the months leading up to the trip, club members inspired their peers to collect over 150 hygiene kits to support Cambodian students and families in maintaining good health and school attendance. In a true display of community spirit, the club partnered with the Elementary School and High School Caring for Cambodia Clubs to pack the kits together.

Immersive Learning in Cambodia

During the trip, students explored Cambodia’s rich cultural and historical landscape, visiting the Angkor Museum and the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temple complex. A visit to APOPO, a rat demining center, offered an eye-opening perspective on the impact of war and the ongoing efforts—supported by both local communities and specially trained African pouched rats—to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance across Cambodia.

Armed with a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s past and present, students engaged with their Cambodian pen pals to explore mindfulness through games, meditation, and art. The experience was enriched by warm hospitality and a shared meal, fostering cross-cultural connections.

Hands-On Service

One of the most impactful moments of the trip was a five-hour primary school improvement project, where students worked alongside local builders to lay paving stones. This initiative will create a safer and more enjoyable school environment, particularly during the rainy season.

After their hard work, students had the opportunity to explore Siem Reap’s vibrant night markets, bringing home souvenirs and lasting memories.

A Community Effort

The Middle School Caring for Cambodia Club successfully raised $4,000 to support Caring for Cambodia, with additional contributions from students who collected thousands of hygiene items and a $585 donation from Tri Time. The funds helped finance the paving project and the development of a mindfulness garden, which is currently in progress.

A heartfelt thank you to the parents, students, and SAS staff who made this trip possible. We hope this experience inspires more students to make service an ongoing and meaningful part of their journey at SAS.
