The 2023–24 Spacelab team has recently undergone bio training as they will be conducting a  bio-related experiment in the International Space Station (ISS) next semester. The experiment involves the cultivation of mycelium that can degrade plastic in a microgravity environment, which is considered very challenging since it is not easy to keep organisms alive in such confined environments—a capsule container with an agar medium inside.

In order to get the whole team prepared for such a special and challenging quest, SpaceLab scheduled a training session exclusively in laboratory biology with an experienced senior from the 2022–23 SpaceLab team. 

With essential tools, from microcentrifuge tubes to falcon tubes, the bio training unfolds under the expert guidance of the host. It was an intricate journey marked by meticulous sterility, careful procedures, and most importantly, the fun of science. Nothing can be assumed entirely clean, which makes gloves, masks, and goggles crucial. Biohazards were handled cautiously and autoclaved, although rigid containers are never subjected to this process. Every detail is critical in the world of laboratory biology, and similarly, every detail is critical on the team’s way toward a successful experiment. 

The team will soon practice and apply all the techniques from this extraordinary training session. With the guidance of experienced mentors and a keen focus on safety and precision, they would be well-prepared to make their mark in the world of space biological exploration, driven by the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
