Singapore American School’s student-led conference is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child's learning journey. Students are provided with a chance to reflect on and share their learning with their parents. Teachers, parents, and students meet together to reflect on the strengths and goals discussed during their conference in October and, if necessary, establish new goals for the fourth quarter.

Each conference will be an hour in length, with a few families in the classroom at a time. During your student-led conference, teachers will be able to speak with you and your child one-on-one for 15 to 20 minutes while other students will be participating in various stations set up in the classroom.

Here are some tips to make the most out of this experience:

Before Learning Conferences

  • Plan Ahead: Speak with your child in advance and let them know that you will be visiting the school to hear about their learning this semester.
  • Arrive on Time: Confirm your time slot and check that you know how to get to the classroom. Stop by the office if you need help.
  • Prepare Questions: Take time to think about any questions you may want to ask your child’s teacher, write them down, and bring them to the conference.

During Learning Conferences

  • Make a Personal Connection: Start the conversation warmly with the teacher.
  • Discuss Positives: Share what’s going well and celebrate your child’s progress.
  • Express Gratitude: Thank your teacher and your child, and make sure you know how to contact the teacher later if needed.
  • Stay Engaged: Be present at the conference. Put your devices on silent mode, and put them away so you can be fully present and listen as your child shares their learning.

After Learning Conferences

  • Review with Your Family: Discuss the conference and plan next steps together.
  • Create a Plan: Make a plan with your family to meet the goals you've set.
  • Stay Involved: Keep track of your progress and stay in touch with your teachers.
  • Provide Feedback: Share your thoughts about the conference when the school sends out a feedback form.
