We are excited to offer a sneak peek at Summer Semester this year. As many of you have requested, we are planning expanded Summer Semester offerings to meet the needs of families that will be staying in Singapore. Instead of the usual four weeks of programming, the SAS Summer Semester Challenge will be available for six weeks from June 8 to July 17. We will provide more detailed information next Friday, May 15 and launch our updated registration website at that time. We know there are lots of questions and details to be worked out and we are busy working on the programs we will offer.

Based on the Singapore Government plan to end the current circuit breaker on June 1, we are planning to offer the Summer Semester programs in person on our campus. Some—but not all —courses will also have virtual alternatives if the government requires us again to go to distance learning,

The SAS Summer Semester Challenge will bring students together to work toward collective goals in the areas of physical, thinking, creativity, communication, and real world challenges. Courses will generally be offered in one-week units and framed as a challenge to complete by the end of the week. The courses will seek to engage and challenge our students in the deeper learning aspirations set forth in our DSLOs.

Each day will begin with a team meeting to connect with peers and set the plan for the day. Then teams will dive into three 60-minute sessions to explore their topic and to work toward their collective goal. In addition to the challenge experience, students will also participate in a 60-minute daily active block which could include anything from basketball to yoga. Students may register for a new challenge each week or sign up for multiple weeks of the same challenge. At the high school level, there will still be opportunities for students to earn geometry and algebra credits as well as expanded challenge course offerings.

We will closely monitor the safe distancing and health and safety guidance provided by the Ministry of Health. At this time we are currently planning on the following precautionary measures:

  • SAS students only will be allowed to attend

  • Class size of 6 -15 students with 1 teacher for a total of 16 people (1 teacher + Instructional Assistant in ELC)

  • If additional students are registered, then additional adults and space will be allocated accordingly

  • Maintain 1-2 m between students at all times; to the degree possible, with assigned seats

  • Temperature check for attendance and submitted to Summer Semester admin

  • Social distance on buses

  • Minimize mixing of groups of students

  • Tracking system to know how students are grouped

Thank you for your interest and we will provide more detailed information and sign-up opportunities next Friday.
