Dear Parents,

On January 3, 1956, Singapore American School officially held its first day of classes. The newly formed school was held in a large colonial home on 15 Rochalie Drive and welcomed 98 students from 42 different nations on that first day. 65 years later, we now welcome 4,000 students to a spacious 36-acre campus that is about to take some big steps into the future.

We are excited to celebrate our 65th anniversary this year. We share a rich history that is interwoven with the history of our host country Singapore. Together, we have grown, innovated, and changed lives over the last 65 years and look forward to a bright future.

This week we celebrated our educators who are celebrating their own SAS anniversaries. Each year we celebrate our educators who have reached a milestone anniversary year (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) This year we have 143 educators who have arrived at one of these anniversary years, and we presented each with an anniversary pin that you can see affixed to their lanyards.

We celebrate our long-serving educators for their service to our community and all they have done to help build SAS. Just as our veteran educators have stood on the shoulders of those who created SAS so those of us new to the community stand on their shoulders.  We owe them a deep debt of gratitude for all they have done and continue to do!

I had the opportunity this week to celebrate with our educators who are reaching their 20 and 25 year anniversaries this year.  For a list of every employee celebrating an anniversary milestone, please click here.

I enjoyed hearing them reflect on their time at SAS. We asked them two specific questions:

  • How has SAS changed during your time here?

  • How has SAS changed you during your time here?

I was struck by their pride in what they have helped build and their reflections on how they have grown personally as educators, colleagues, and in many cases as parents.  And, I loved hearing their stories of adventures and misadventures in their years of service.

We also reached out to some of our other educators celebrating milestone years to have them share their reflections as well. Check out this short video with some of their thoughts.

As we look ahead to more celebrations ahead this year, I encourage you to participate in our Eagles on the Dot celebration organized by our PTA. This event will be held from February 10 to April 5. They have put together a list of fun destinations and hidden gems that appeal to various age groups and interests. Take a selfie or wefie at each location, tag @Eaglesonthedot2021, and post it on Instagram using the hashtag #eaglesonthedot2021. There are lots of lucky draw prizes to be won! The lucky draw will be held on April 12. Buy your tickets here!

Keep an eye out this year for fun opportunities to continue celebrating our 65th anniversary and please join me in congratulating all SAS educators celebrating a years of service anniversary!
