Dear SAS Parents,
The first week of the 2019-20 school year is now complete. Welcome and thank you!
As I’ve walked around campus this week, it has been very nice to see the smiling faces of our students. Students, while perhaps a bit nervous about the beginning of the year, are connecting with one another and with their new teachers. These relationships are vital because they help us build a strong school community and serve as the foundation for all the learning to come during the course of the year.
As Jacqueline Zeller of the Harvard Graduate School of Education notes: “The sense of safety and security afforded by close relationships with teachers provides children with a steady footing to support them through developmental challenges.”
The beginning of a school year can be daunting, especially for new students. It is great to see our peer support students in action, showing our newest Eagles around campus and introducing them to peers. This program provides critical support for new students, and it provides a sense of purpose and leadership practice for the peer support students themselves.
There will be many more opportunities to connect with one another as we get into the school year. We invite you to our Wellness Summit next weekend and then mark your calendars for the Welcome Back BBQ on September 7.
