MARCH 16: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENT COFFEE HIGHLIGHTS
Didi Hari Krishnan

The mornings begin with morning greeting:
The purpose of a greeting sets a positive tone, gives students a sense of recognition and belonging, helps students learn each other's names, and helps students practice offering hospitality.

We sometimes start with a way to move, a way to greet, and a topic to share.

The graphic above shows our social and emotional learning (SEL) approach in elementary school. There are three aspects:
- Responsive Classroom
- CASEL Core Competencies
- Core Values

Responsive Classroom
- It is an approach to teaching that helps students develop academic, social and emotional skills.

- It is a combination of core beliefs (SEL Competencies and academic competencies)
- There are six guiding principles and ten teaching practices/strategies that lead to an environment in which students can thrive.

This video provides a deeper understanding of Responsive Classroom:

One of the strategies we emphasize is teacher language. There are three R's in the book, Power of Words:
Reinforcing: build on children’s strengths
Reminding: help children stay on track, organized, responsible and safe
Redirecting: keeps children safe and productive when self-control is failing them
Most effective when delivered in a calm, direct and brief manner

Read this article, intended for teachers, and think about how this could be applied by parents in the home.   We will be discussing this when done so feel free to highlight or take notes if that is a preference. Here's an article for parents: https://www.responsiveclassroom.org/reinforcing-reminding-and-redirecting/
