BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT: GETTING TO CALM
by Mark Swarstad

Throughout any given day, we get emotional about certain events that take place. Often this emotion takes us away from seeing things from a broader perspective, and this results to disappointment, hurting a relationship, and perhaps making us feel bad for ourselves. We know that once we get emotional, there is a break in connections between our rational brain and the emotional part of our brain. We also know that once we calm ourselves, we can put things in perspective and move on without causing too much damage.

Daily deep breathing exercises can help build strong neural pathways between our prefrontal cortex (the thinking part of the brain) and our limbic system (the emotional part of the brain). This makes it easier to get calm and rationalize when we find ourselves upset over something.

Practicing Dr. Andrew Weil’s ‘4-7-8’ breathing technique daily while riding the bus or taxi will help build stronger neural pathways, teach you how to get calm, and how to make clearer decisions. These skills are terrific for all of us to use and particularly important when it comes to helping our children gain greater self-control.
