ASIAN STORIES AT SAS ASIA FEST
Ana Sousa Gavin

In the storytelling session at the second grade annual Asia Fest at SAS, three storytellers from the Story Telling Club told Asian stories and facilitated crafts inspired by those stories. Groups of ten students visited our storytelling room with a tour guide parent and enjoyed a story and crafts in each.

For those not familiar with Asia Fest, this is an amazing event with an incredible choice of rooms to visit, featuring various Asian countries. There are activities, food, and presentations, that allow the students to learn more about these countries in a really fun way. Since it’s only one afternoon, it’s difficult to visit every single room, because thanks to parent volunteers there’s such a large choice.

We are thankful to:

  • Mr Bagley, the teacher organizing this year’s Asia Fest, who welcomed our idea and encouraged visitors to pass by the Asian Stories room.
  • Mrs Sundaresan and Mrs Smith, for lending us their classrooms, so we could host students for storytelling and crafts.
  • The storytellers and SAS parents, who prepared their stories and crafts and animated our storytelling room: Mrs Robertaccio, Mrs Kim, and Mrs Sousa Gavin.
  • Mrs Cindy Zhou, a storyteller and SAS parent, who had prepared her stories and craft but was unable to tell because we only got 3 groups visiting our Asian Stories Room.

Second group of students listening to the story The Three Brothers – a Chinese Folktale

Even though we didn’t get as many visitors as we had hoped, it was still a wonderful opportunity to share stories with SAS students and we hope to be back again next year!
