School Finance 610: Re-enrollment for 2017-18


Our annual re-enrollment process is now underway, and all SAS families should complete the re-enrollment or withdrawal process by March 1. We thank those who have already done so. For families new this year or anyone with questions about it, we take this opportunity to explain the rationale and details of our re-enrollment process.


WHY RE-ENROLLMENT?

For parents, re-enrollment represents a renewal of your commitment to SAS for the following year, and completing the process guarantees your children seats at the school. For SAS, an accurate projection of returning-student numbers allows admissions to accept new students promptly; this encourages strong applicants to join SAS and lets new families complete their planning. Also, administrators can plan staff assignments and recruit excellent candidates. Financially, the school can avoid damaging enrollment fluctuations and keep tuition rate increases low. Finally, program needs, facilities schedules, and classroom materials can be predicted and addressed.


Parents sometimes ask why SAS charges a fee for re-enrollment. Like most international schools, we have found that a monetary commitment yields a truer estimate of returning students, which is the goal of re-enrollment. A fee helps eliminate false re-enrollments and encourages undecided families to move forward with their planning. On the school's side, accepting a student's re-enrollment fee commits us to having a spot for that child in August and providing the expected educational program. Singapore does not allow tuition deposits, so international schools here either require tuition fees up to six months in advance or a re-enrollment fee. We feel that our system meets our objectives and is fair to current and future families. The fee is included in our average total cost of attendance, which we benchmark against other schools' averages; you can view these comparisons in our recent budget article.

CHANGES TO RE-ENROLLMENT THIS YEAR

If you have gone through re-enrollment before at SAS, you will notice some changes. We have moved the entire process onto the Veracross platform, an integrated school information management system. You may complete the 2017-18 re-enrollment process in one sitting, rather than in two stages as in previous years. An email on January 18 contained a link to your personal re-enrollment page. This page has four steps you must complete for your student to be successfully re-enrolled:

  1. Update your family's information.
  2. Read and acknowledge the school's policies.
  3. Read the Advisory Note and sign the Student Contract, both required by the Singapore government.
  4. Pay your re-enrollment fee for each student. If a company or sponsor will pay, tick this box and communicate with the relevant party to ensure that SAS receives payment by March 1.

Until you have completed the process, you may return to your re-enrollment page at any time before March 15 to change information or check a student's re-enrollment status. This is particularly useful if you want to see whether your company has made the payment.


Only by re-enrolling (with payment) or by withdrawing do you complete the process. Families unsure of their plans have two options. They may re-enroll and pay $2,500 by the March 1 deadline, with a two-week grace period to withdraw with a full refund. Or they may choose to wait and pay a fee of $3,000 per student if they re-enroll after March 1; in this case, a seat is not guaranteed. We are currently accepting new students for predicted openings and will start filling all unsecured spots on March 2. At that point, the later a returning student re-enrolls, the less likely a place will be available. If you are undecided, let us know in the "Life is Complicated" section of the form. However, keep in mind that this action does not hold a child's spot or delay the need for a re-enrollment decision.
