Subjects and Curriculum

Based on our belief in the development of the whole child, the core curriculum along with our support services exemplifies our commitment to the SAS Vital Few: Academic Rigor, Professional Excellence and Extraordinary Care for each and every child. We strive to make the most of your child’s educational experience in the Intermediate School and our main goal is for our students to grow as learners and to develop the five R’s: reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic, respect and responsibility.

Our academic program supports the individual needs of our students and includes studies in the core curricular areas: reading, writing, math, science, and social science, as well as in specialist areas: art, music, PE, world language, and technology. In addition to these academic classes, students have access to support services in the following domains: academic support, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), counseling, GATE and enrichment.

Art, Music and Physical Education
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 receive instruction in art, music, and physical education on a three-day rotation. Read More >

Our health curriculum recognizes health education as fundamental to supporting lifelong wellness. The curriculum addresses topics in physical, social, and mental health relevant to the intermediate years. Mathematics
The Intermediate School math program is dedicated to helping students learn to value mathematics and to communicate their ideas confidently, clearly, and successfully. Through the use of the adopted text, Everyday Mathematics, and other supplementary materials and manipulatives, the students are guided and encouraged to explore mathematical concepts so that they are equipped with essential skills to meet the challenges of the future.

Reading Language Arts
The goal of the Singapore American School literacy program is to ensure that all students become proficient and critical readers and writers, motivated to read and write throughout their lives. To achieve this goal, the Intermediate School literacy program is based on a comprehensive, balanced approach in which reading, writing, speaking and listening are regarded as complementary processes that enable students to develop skills and under- standings that will serve them in all academic areas. Technology education in the Intermediate School is closely integrated with each grade level's instructional program. Classroom teachers meet with a computer integration specialist to develop IT projects that support the curriculum while building technology skills.

World Languages
World Language classes are offered for 40 minutes daily. Students have the opportunity to choose between Mandarin and Spanish. The main goal of the World Language Program is to help students move forward on the spectrum of oral proficiency in the target language chosen. Read More >

Intermediate Library serves students from grade 3 to grade 5. In addition to providing quality reading materials that are constantly being evaluated and enhanced, the library also supports the curriculum and teachers of these grade levels.
