Welcome to Singapore American School
A handful of parents established the Singapore American School (SAS) in 1956 in a private home with just 105 students to meet the educational needs of a burgeoning expatriate community. Today, SAS is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school offering an American-based curriculum for preschool through grade 12. There are more than 3,800 students from more than 50 nations, and approximately 70% hold U.S. passports. SAS is recognized by the Office of Overseas Schools, U.S. State Department, is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and is the largest single-campus international school in the world.
SAS is located on a 36-acre campus in the Woodlands area of Singapore, approximately 35 minutes drive from downtown Singapore. The campus is purpose built, supports classroom spaces for music, art, and drama, and includes state-of -the-art facilities for students at all grade levels. Students enjoy classrooms that are both modern and spacious, with typical classroom sizes of 91m2 in the Primary and Intermediate Schools, and 71m2 in the Middle and High Schools. With open airy walkways, flowing fountains and tropical courtyards located throughout the campus, SAS provides a safe and pleasant learning environment in one of the finest international school facilities in the world.
The campus includes three distinct divisions: elementary school (preschool through grade five), middle school (grades six through eight) and high school (grades nine through twelve). A separate and purpose built early childhood center (ECC) provides a special learning environment for preschool and pre-kindergarten (age 3 and 4) students.
The professional staff numbers 343 with nearly 68% holding master's degrees or above. Nearly 70% of the faculty members are from the United States, and many of them have had substantial international school experience. The majority of the faculty members who are non-US citizens come from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The average tenure of the faculty at SAS is six years. The quality of the faculty at SAS has often been cited as one of the school’s major strengths. Many faculty members are actively involved in the greater school community. They coach sports, forensics, and Model United Nations teams, sponsor service clubs and after-school activities, and participate in community-wide events. Several teachers have published books that are used in SAS classes. Another 217 employees serve in clerical and administrative support service roles.
The SAS educational program enjoys a reputation for being one of the world's finest international schools. SAS students consistently rank higher on academic achievement tests than their peers in U.S. school systems. Class sizes emphasize educationally sound student-teacher ratios. Student/teacher ratios across all of the divisions reflects the SAS commitment to ensuring a quality education and a high level of pastoral care for all of our students. For our preschool and pre-kindergarten students the average student/teacher ratio is 16 or less. For kindergarten through grade 12, the average ratio is 22 or less.
