New Student Orientation in August

SAS Quick Start Guide 

In the first week of August you will receive an SAS Quick Start Guide via email from the SAS Communications Office. This digital guide will offer the detailed information you need to orient yourself to the SAS campus, buy uniforms, attend orientations, and visit both classrooms and teachers at our Open House the weekend before school launches.

Orientation: More Details

Parents and students find orientation an essential part of a positive transition to SAS. To introduce you to our school and help you learn more about life at SAS, administrators and counselors from each school division will conduct group orientations for new students and their parents according to the following schedule.

Please choose one of the dates below and schedule work or other obligations accordingly. For Primary, Intermediate and Middle School, please schedule your orientation date with the Admissions Office at newstudent@sas.edu.sg.

  • Early Childhood Center
    Beginning August 6, your ECC teacher will contact you directly by phone or email (for those not yet settled in Singapore) to arrange a group orientation time. The orientations will be held on August 12 and 13, 2013 in your child's classroom. Please consider which date you prefer in advance to facilitate scheduling. The students entering preschool or pre-kindergarten attend with their parent(s), so they can meet their teachers, become familiar with their classroom and even meet a new friend or two. Please note: The first day of class is August 14, two days after IS, MS, and HS begin. 
     
  • Primary School (Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2)
    Dates: August 2, 5, 6, 7
    Time: 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. 
    Venue: P220 (2nd level) 
    Please schedule your orientation date and time at newstudent@sas.edu.sg.

    In addition, Primary School students will also meet their teacher on either August 12 or 13. The teacher will contact parents directly about one week before school starts to schedule this meeting time. Please note: The first day of school is August 14.

  • Intermediate School (Grades 3, 4, 5)
    Dates: August 2, 5, 6, 7 
    Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. 
    Venue: i311 
    Please schedule your orientation date at newstudent@sas.edu.sg.
    The first day of school is August 12. 

    IS families will experience orientation with all other new families entering the same grade level. Their grade level counselors will walk them through the important details of SAS life, provide a tour and time for new families and students to get acquainted. Class placements will be communicated before Open House on Saturday, August 10. We hope you can join us and we look forward to welcoming you to the SAS Community.

  • Middle School (Grades 6, 7, 8)
    Dates: August 2, 7 
    Time: 8:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. 
    Venue: M301 
    Please schedule your orientation date at newstudent@sas.edu.sg.
    Middle School students will start school August 12. 

    This orientation session will allow students and parents to learn more about the program, sign up for classes, complete a short assessment to ensure proper placement in Math. In addition, if a student chooses to take a Chinese course we will offer a brief assessment for class placement. 

  • Grade 8 Laptop Program Orientation (Grade 8 Only)

    Hosted on Open House Day

    Date: August 10

    Time: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 

    New Grade 8 Students will be trained in connecting to the SAS network and other services, Digital Citizenship and general processes and procedures relating to the laptop program. Students will leave this session with their school assigned laptop and will be prepared to use it on the first day of school. 


  • High School (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

    High School Student Course Scheduling
    New students must create a class schedule with their HS Counselor. Counselors are available to meet new families by appointment beginning on July 30 through August 7.     Please review this information for new students on the HS website and contact Ms. Jullaiha Rodzi at jrodzi@sas.edu.sg in the High School Counseling Office to set up an appointment. You are strongly encouraged to book early. 

    From the Counseling Office: “Counselors look forward to meeting with you. We realize your time is precious; neighborhoods need to be viewed, houses found, and uniforms purchased, but a few minutes of counselor time can help us front load the orientation process. Most students walk out of the meeting with their finalized a high school class schedule.”

    HS Group Orientation for Students New to SAS
    Hosted on Open House Day
    Date: August 10
    Time: 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 
    Venue: Drama Theater 

    An orientation program sponsored by the Peer Support Program and our High School PTA will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 8:30 a.m. (immediately before the 9:00 a.m. all school Open House) in the Drama Theater. The program allows students the opportunity to meet their Peer Support buddy, other new students, find their classrooms, say hello to their teachers, and have a chance to find out more about SAS from their peers. A separate but concurrent Parent Orientation Program will be offered by our PTA. Parents will have a chance to hear from various members of our school community, including our activities/athletic director, school administrators, and PTA. This program is only for families who are new to Singapore and SAS.

Open House

On Saturday, August 10, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. you are invited to attend the SAS Open House, a campus-wide event that welcomes both new and returning families to our campus. Look for detailed information about Open House in the Quick Start Guide when it arrives in early August.
