Our Philosophy on Reading: Reading opens up new worlds, expands one’s thinking and allows us to collaborate with great minds of the past and present. Reading is perhaps the most fundamental and essential skill that schools teach.
Our aim in promoting summer reading is to encourage students to find books that appeal to them and to stretch their minds beyond the prescribed curriculum. In Middle School we want to foster the love of books that so many children already have and to reward that behavior by recognizing students’ efforts when they return to us at the start of each school year.
Summer Reading: 6th, 7th & 8th Graders: Our Reading and Language Arts teachers in the Middle School have developed a list of approximately 100 books that we recommend as good summer reading for 7th and 8th graders. This list is posted on our website and copies of all of the titles are available in our Middle School Library.
Making the Connection: Once all of the students have returned to school in August, every homebase teacher will be holding discussions with their group about the books they have read. We hope to provide a time for the students to share their reading interests and to encourage others to read books they have enjoyed.
