English Department Student Assignment for the Summer Reading Reflection

Part 1: Written response

After the summer holiday you will be given time in your English class to write about the book you choose to read this summer. 

 Your teacher may ask you to respond to prompts such as the following:

  • I think the author’s message is…
  • One intriguing character in the book is…
  • An incident in the book I remember clearly is…
  • An image that stays in my mind is…
  • The setting creates a mood of…
  • One conflict in the book that struck me was …

Your teacher may ask you to make connections with the following topics:  

  • your life
  • your reading
  • films/ TV shows you’ve seen
  • history
  • current events

You will need to support your observations by making references to the text.

Part 2: Book talk

You will be given the chance to give a short book talk to your class.

You need to have the book in hand for the talk so that your classmates can get a sense of the physical look of the book’s cover and typeface.
