Primary School - Early Childhood Center

Primary School

The Primary School challenges young children to learn in a myriad of ways through an enriching, captivating and developmentally appropriate program. We provide children with opportunities to explore, experiment and discover, while they learn the fundamental skills appropriate to their stage of development and we prepare them for further academic growth.

Our young children are tomorrow’s leaders. They need a good foundation in a caring environment, where they can thrive and develop at an appropriate pace, to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Intermediate School - GRADES 3 TO 5

Intermediate School

The intermediate program emphasizes the basic subjects with a major part of the program directed towards the development of language, writing and math skills. Of equal importance is the social development that is taking place in children. The program of studies reflects the fact that a child needs to become more fully aware of the concepts of family, neighborhood, country and the world in a sequential program.

In the intermediate program, science and social studies processes and concepts are highlighted as well as integrated with other subject areas in order to help students come to a wide and full appreciation of the world. Science is a discovery process using film, pictures, books, models, as well as "hands-on" activities. The social studies curriculum focuses on the development of concepts, ideas and methods of inquiry. The students' immediate environment of self and family is related to a study of people in communities, cities, and cultures throughout the world. The Mandarin program also offers students exposure to the Chinese culture as well as to written and spoken Mandarin. Children in grades three through five also receive special instruction in art, physical education, music, computer, health and swimming.

The continuous progress concept enables each child to advance as quickly as he or she can depending only on his or her ability. Various teaching methods, including small group instruction, independent study, large group instruction and one-to-one instruction are provided by teachers in an effort to best meet the needs of each student.

Classroom activities in a rich environment are supplemented by a variety of additional experiences that may include

-
visiting artists, performers, and authors
-
field trips
-
drama, role-playing and story-telling
-
cooking
-
library activities
-
extracurricular opportunities

Parent volunteers are encouraged to participate regularly both in and out of the classroom throughout their child’s Primary School experience.

Intermediate School children have an opportunity to participate in a number of after-school activities offered through the Elementary After School Activities (EASA) program or through community organizations such as Scouts, SACAC and others. Most activities are offered on campus.

Middle School - GRADES 6 TO 8

Middle School

Students in the middle school study core courses and electives that build on the skills learned in elementary school and enable them to succeed in high school. SAS offers one of the widest selections of middle school elective courses among international schools.

The core academic program includes instruction in four major subject areas: reading and language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The reading and language arts curriculum provides a variety of writing opportunities ranging from journals, narratives and short stories to formal research papers. Written and oral work sharpens the students' vocabulary, spelling, listening and speaking skills.

The mathematics curriculum helps students become problem solvers and builds a foundation for more advanced math courses. The field and laboratory-based science curriculum focuses on physical and environmental issues and their inter-relationships. Students become actively involved in the scientific process as they investigate the world around them.

In social studies, middle school students study government and world geography, which includes the study of the people and culture of Singapore, ancient civilizations and American history. Formal computer instruction in fully-equipped computer labs is an important part of the middle school elective curriculum along with music, art, home living, French, Spanish, Mandarin, dance and technology. Students also take physical education which includes instruction in swimming and health.

There are many activities and clubs for students including but not limited to student government, swimming, photography, scuba, strings, tennis, art, computer, basketball, indoor and outdoor soccer, volleyball, ecology, dance, Knowledge Masters, badminton, and pickle ball. All interested children are invited to join the age-appropriate activities.

For one week during the year, middle school students participate in a Classroom Without Walls experience.

INTERIM SEMESTER
For one week during second semester, all regularly scheduled high school courses cease while students and teachers participate in the interim semester program. Students select a course from a wide variety of activities conducted in Singapore, Asia, Australia and Europe. In the past, interim semester has offered SAS students opportunities such as trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal, scuba diving in the Maldives, camping in Australia, traveling the silk road through China, exploring the history of Greece, student teaching at SAS's elementary and middle schools and international cooking, calligraphy, sailing, or golfing in Singapore.
